Sleeping Beauty’s Castle – by Lisa Penz

Disneyland is celebrating it’s 60th Anniversary this summer! I was so lucky to visit during their 2nd weekend of the Diamond Celebrations at both Disneyland Resort and California Adventure Park! It was incredible on so many sensory levels… all of them, in fact!

To honor this special anniversary and because I like to bring a sense of Disney magic to all of my paintings, I’ve brought to life my vision of Sleeping Beauty’s castle, which ultimately stands for a Legacy of creative dreams—Disneyland. In this interpretation you will see Walt’s ideals of the past, meeting the present and merging with the future. Honoring the past while building upon our tomorrows is at the heart of this concept.

Princess Aurora’s gentleness combined with Queen Elsa’s spellbinding fireworks (Iceworks!) ignite the sky and shine a light on that rich place in Disney fan’s hearts—the Parks. Here, the castle is visually split – yet emotionally united. The left side represents the foundation of the past and the right side exemplifies the present and the future. The iconic statue of Walt Disney himself (with Olaf) symbolizes how Walt’s impact is still relevant to the present of Disney and how he is also very much connected to the future… however, I didn’t leave Mickey out… There are 2 hidden Mickeys in this illustration!
